Kingfisher's 21st Century Learning Center, referred to as STARS, is made possible by a grant from the Oklahoma State Department of Education. The before-school portion of the program is held Monday-Thursday from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and will be offered at two sites- Gilmour Elementary and Kingfisher Middle School. STARS after-school program will be held Monday-Thursday at Kingfisher Middle School from 3:00 p.m. to 5:15 p.m. STARS is open to students in grades 3-6.

Goals

STARS is an opportunity for youth and their families to continue learning and growing afer the school day is over. The focus is to provide high-quality academic enrichment as well as drug and vildent prevention programs, technology education programs, art, music, recreation programs, counseling and character education.

Discipline Plan

Participants in STARS are expected to follow the rules of their student handbook and other site specific rules. In order to maintain a safe and fun environment, staff will work closely with parents and participants to ensure proper behavior. A system of good discipline helps the group stay on task, behave responsibly and with self-control, and work well with other people. In the event of a disciplinary problem, a conduct report will be written, which the parent must sign. When two conduct reports have been written a conference with the students, parent, and project directors will occur. With the third conduct report, the participant will be suspended for day, weeks, or permanently depending on the severity of the behavior. Physical aggression against other participants or staff or running away from program activities may result in immediate suspension after the first incident.

Parent and Family Involvement

We encourage all parents/family members to become involved with the STARS program. Daily contact between our staff and parents is an important part of the program. By sharing information concerning your child's activities and welfare, we can work together to better meet the child's needs. It is extremely important that any change in address, emergency numbers, etc, be kept current. Newsletters are sent home to keep parents informed of upcoming events, programs, and activities. Conferences can be arranged with parents and staff as needed. Family members are encouraged to visit the program and to share their special talents, skills, and experiences with the children.

Participant Personal Files

Each participant will have a personal file which will include their application, any conduct reports, permission slips, accident reports, academic pre-post tests, and other relevant documents. These files are strictly confidential.

Personal Belongings

We assume no liability for lost or damaged items. Students can keep personal belongings in their backpacks. We make reasonable effort to limit opportunity for items to be lost or damaged but we do not have secure locations for storing valuables. If your child loses anything, they should go to the school Lost and Found.

Termination From The Program

Participants will forfeit their space in the program for any of the following reasons: Excessive absences, behavior that threatens physical or emotional safety of self or others, or breaking any school rules that are deemed worthy of termination.
